Through the inquiry process, students move from current understandings to new and deeper understandings. This process involves:
exploring, wondering and questioning
experimenting and playing with possibilities
making connections between previous learning and current learning
making predictions and acting purposefully to see what happens
collecting data and reporting findings
clarifying existing ideas and reappraising perceptions of events
applying concepts to deepen conceptual understandings
researching and seeking information
establishing and testing theories
solving problems in a variety of ways
taking and defending a position.
How is your PYPx inquiry connected to the SDGs?
What questions are going to drive your inquiry?
How are your questions connected to the PYP Key Concepts?
Does your inquiry pass through the six filters?
First filter: Is the issue/opportunity connected to the SDGs and it is something you are really interested in/interested in learning about?
Second filter: Is it connected to a transdisciplinary theme?
Third filter: Is it an appropriate issue to present to the target audience in Grade 1-4, as well as parents?
Fourth filter: Are there books/internet resources? These need to be age appropriate and there is enough information for an 8-week inquiry?
Fifth filter: Can you, for example, visit a museum, speak to members of the community, collect data outside of school, contact an organisation? Can you use primary sources easily? This is where all our Swiss resources can be used.
Sixth filter: Think globally, act locally - Can you be personally involved? The inquiry must lead to action which can be a personal change or service learning orientated.
